Leonardo DiCaprio has announced an unexpected new business endeavour, revealing that he has invested in a frozen seafood company.
Leo being Leo, we aren’t talking about any old fish fingers here. Instead, there’s an important environmental reason behind his latest venture: Love The Wild deals in sustainable frozen food, and sells frozen meals made from farm-raised seafood like striped bass, barramundi, catfish and trout (instead of contributing to the over-fishing of wild populations).
Estimates show the earth’s population approaching nine billion by 2050, putting tremendous pressure on our natural food resource,’ the Oscar-winning star said in a statement released to People. ‘Seafood is a primary source of protein for nearly a billion people – but climate change, acidification and over fishing are putting increased pressure on our oceans’ natural stability.’
‘The exploitation of our oceans has left many marine ecosystems on the brink of total collapse, which is hurting our ability to harvest our seas as a reliable food source as we have for thousands of years,’ he added.
According to Leo, Love The Wild’s work is ‘empowering people to take action on this crisis in a very meaningful way.’
A UN Messenger Of Peace, the Titanic star has long been an high profile advocate for environmental issues and last year released climate change documentary Before The Flood.
So far, the company is offering up-market ready meals like red trout with salsa verde, barramundi with mango sriracha chutney and catfish with cajun crème (as yet, there are no fish fingers).
Time for a 'Leonardo DiCarprio' seafood pun? No?
