It has been confirmed that Leonardo DiCaprio will play his namesake Da Vinci in an upcoming biopic. Based on the biography by Walter Isaacson, the film will depict the life of the great Renaissance polymath.

Following an intense bidding battle by Universal and Paramount, Paramount won the rights to the book, Deadline reported.

The film will be produced by DiCaprio's production company, Appian Way, who have also made films such as Shutter Island, The Aviator and Red Riding Hood.

In a 2014 interview with NPR, DiCaprio revealed he was actually named after the famed Italian genius.

'My father tells me that [he and my mother] were on their honeymoon at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, I believe. They were looking at a da Vinci painting, and allegedly I started kicking furiously while my mother was pregnant. And my father took that as a sign, and I suppose DiCaprio wasn't that far from da Vinci. And so, my dad, being the artist that he is, said, "That's our boy's name."'

There is no release date for the film as yet.
