Lena Dunham is currently on her promo tour for her debut book,* Not That Kind Of Girl*. And to get a flavour of what it's all about, she's unveiled an excerpt of it by reading aloud from the tome at the Book Expo America in New York.
What she read out was tiny, but it packs a powerful message or five, as reported by The Cut:
'And if I can take what I’ve learned to make one menial job easier for you, prevent you from having the kind of sex where you feel like you must keep your sneakers on in case you want to run away during the act, then every misstep of mine was worthwhile. I’m already predicting my future shame in thinking I had anything to offer you, but also my future glory in having stopped you from trying an expensive juice cleanse, or thinking that it was your fault when the person that you’re dating suddenly backs away because they’re intimidated by the clarity of your personal mission here on Earth.'
From this, we gather that Lena's going to be delving into some intimate details, Caitlin Moran-style, then presenting them to us so we can learn a bit from her mistakes. Not that she wants us to think that she's going to teach us anything we might not know before, but, like, just in case we're interested, she's putting out a book out.
What's nice is that although it's a collection of essays – just like her Girls character Hannah Horvath's essay-led memoirs – the writing style seems to be a lot more concise and decisive.
The downside is that if you're looking for more like this, you'll have to wait until at least September – that's when the book goes on sale in America. In the meantime, here are some books you might want to read beforehand though.
