If anybody nailed theMet Galatheme this year, it was Lena Dunham. In a Christopher Kane t-shirt dress emblazoned with ‘RUBBERIST’ and a pair of gloves, the Girls actress nodded to the Camp: Notes On Fashion theme in a risqué way, with a less-than-subtle shout out to those with a rubber fetish. She was joined by her co-star Jemima Kirke in an equally outrageous outfit, who wore a matching dress paying homage to ‘LOONERS’ (aka those with a balloon fetish). They both looked on point – and decidedly camp.
But it’s not as if this mattered to the Internet, because as soon as Lena stepped out for the event, one magazine tweeted, ‘Lena Dunham has arrived and we’re hoping she leaves soon.’ Somebody else cruelly chimed in, ‘Watching Lena Dunham pose should be illegal.’ And others were quick to ask sarcastic questions, such as ‘Who let her in?’ or declare ‘When are we gonna draw the line and stop inviting Lena Dunham to things.’
Nobody else on my Timeline received as hostile as a reaction, and it all seems a bit unfair, when the whole point of the gala is to follow the theme. Whether you love her or you hate her, Lena did it perfectly, unlike many of the men – ahem, Rami Malek and Taron Egerton, who have literally been cast in blockbuster films to play gay icons Freddie Mercury and Elton John - who just turned up in black suits. Or Karlie Kloss, who turned up in a minidress with… big sleeves?
If it's anything Lena should be criticised about, it’s for attending in the first place, as she famously wrote an article for Lenny Letter in 2016 (which has since been deleted) where she shared her distaste of fashion’s night of nights. While in conversation with Amy Schumer, she said, ‘You and I were literally sitting across from each other at the Met Ball, and it was like a crazy countdown to when we could escape. You were like, “We’re honoured to be here. We’re honoured to be here.”’ We guess Lena's probably changed her mind - we all say flippant things about stuff we supposedly hate - but still, there’s no need for the nasty comments about the way she works a camera.
