Lena Dunham's Girls has made superstars of songs like Robyn's Dancing On My Own and Icona Pop and Charli XCX's I Love It.
But when it comes to writing the hit series she prefers to go for a more mainstream sound; the albums of the abundantly popular country-and-western-leaning Taylor Swift. 'She [Swift] writes her own destiny in a way which is very unusual, especially for a young woman in the world of pop music.' Lena said in a recent interview.
'I wrote half of the first season of Girls listening to her Speak Now album and wrote much of the third season listening to Red.'
Wow, so Lena's either been typing very fast, fast enough to burn holes into her keyboard, or she's been listening to a lot of Taylor Swift on repeat. 'Taylor is a good friend of mine. I call her and text her all the time. She helps me be stronger and make better decisions.' she told* Glamour.*
'She has amazing creative instincts. She's really a proponent of not feeling pressure from anybody else and recognising that you have a better connection to what your brand is than anybody else.'
Lena's admiration for Taylor runs deep; the TV director, producer and actress told New York Magazine way back in 2013: 'Anyone who thinks Taylor Swift isn’t good for the girl cause has to be crazy, because any woman who’s dominating the charts, the creative director of her own empire, and made whatever millions of dollars last year is only lifting us up. Killing it.'
Does this mean that Marnie's musical moments in the show, those cringiest parts of the series, might one day feature a bit of Taylor? We know we're meant to be embarrassed by the sing-a-long bits but there's only so much toe-curling our feet can take.
