There’s a lot of crossover when it comes to Girls, so much so that Jemima Kirke has complained she always has to point out she isn’t like Jessa, and there was a lot of confusion when creator Lena Dunham took a 'Which Girls character are you?' quiz and shegot Marnie.
However, it does seem her relationship with Elijah in the series has some elements of truth to it, as she told a gala dinner that she’s dated ‘so many’ gay men in the past.
Attending the Point Honors New York Gala arm-in-arm with Andrew Rannells, who plays her (mostly, remember that time with him and Marnie?) gay ex-boyfriend, she joked with the audience: ‘This is probably the most attractive room I have yet to enter. I don't want to traffic in stereotypes, but gay men clean up real good, which is probably why I have dated so many of you.’
Lena then spoke about the way her sister’s coming out affected her (you might remember Grace Dunham played, um, her sister in her debut film Tiny Furniture). ‘I have always felt a strong and emotional connection to members of the LGBTQ community. It was actually a huge disappointment for me, when I came of age and realised that I was sexually attracted to men,’ according to Vanity Fair.
‘When my sister came out, I thought, "Thank god, someone in this family can truly represent my passions and beliefs."' Very eloquently, she also explained her gratitude that her sister could come out in a very accepting family, saying, ‘She was assured by the adults in her life that she was not only accepted, but adored for who she is. I am so happy that this is the way she was able to enter the world as a woman and an LGBTQ person’
Aw. She's certain to have a few wannabe gay best friends after this speech.
