Lena Dunham has split from boyfriend of over five years and Bleachers frontman Jack Antonoff, according to a report from E! News.

The break up has followed something of a bad year for Dunham, who was widely criticized for publicly supporting Girls writer Murray Miller after he was accused of sexual assault by actress Aurora Perrineau.

Lenham had released a statement alongside Girls co-showrunner Jenni Konner, reading ‘While our first instinct is to listen to every woman's story, our insider knowledge of Murray's situation makes us confident that sadly this accusation is one of the 3 percent of assault cases that are misreported every year. It is a true shame to add to that number, as outside of Hollywood women still struggle to be believed. We stand by Murray and this is all we'll be saying about this issue’.

Dunham later apologized with a follow up statement posted on her Twitter account.

Dunham and Antonoff are believed to have met on a blind date in 2012, just after Girls’ first season premiered on HBO; she previously revealed in an interview with Time Out that she was 40 minutes late for the meeting. Antonoff was effusive about Lena in an interview with The Times in 2015, saying that even after two years together he still wanted to know ‘everything about her’.

Dunham was similarly vocal about her feelings for Antonoff, two, penning an essay as recently as October 2017 in which she declared: ‘It’s safe to say that before Jack my life was full of far fewer sights. He showed me the importance of making political statements using your public platform. He showed me the joy of collaboration. He showed me the magic of his home state of New Jersey and turned the butt of my snotty New Yorker jokes into a glimmering fantasyland. I know he does the same for all the artists he produces for, the fans who come to his shows and the recipients of his love. I try and share nicely’. In November 2017 she even revealed via Twitter that she thought she might be on the receiving end of a proposal.

While the reasons for their break up aren’t exactly clear, the decision to cool things off is thought to be mutual. Dunham alluded to upcoming projects that will see her being based in Los Angeles on her Instagram page, while Antonoff is seemingly busy with his own creative collaborations.
