Lady Gaga has released a powerful public service music video aiming to raise awareness about sexual assault on university campuses.

The video accompanies a song sung by Gaga called Till It Happens to You, which was co-written by Canadian songwriter Diane Warren and is dedicated to survivors of sexual assault around the world.

Created to accompany campus rape documentary The Hunting Ground, and directed by Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke, the video contains stark scenes of sexual assaults on university campuses, and female students trying to cope after they've survived sexual assault.

“We hope u feel our love & solidarity through the song & perhaps find some peace in knowing u r not alone through this film,” Gaga tweeted alongside the video.

“One in five college women will be sexually assaulted this year unless something changes" the video announces at the end.

Gaga, who has previously spoken publically about being sexually assaulted at the age of 19, joined a campaign to fight sexual assault on university campuses in New York.

A portion of proceeds from the song will be donated to charities and organisations working with survivors of sexual assault and rape.
