Following a flurry of rumours, it seemed that Lady Gaga had signed up to play Donetella Versace - to appear in the third season of hit anthology series, American Crime Story. Sorry Gaga fans who were looking forward to this one but the singer will NOT be playing the iconic designer.

Speaking to Variety, the show's producer Ryan Murphy, was asked whether Gaga was in talks to play Donetella: “Not really. She’s a friend. But she’s very busy this next year — she’s doing Super Bowl and then she’s doing ‘A Star Is Born’ and I believe that she’s going on tour."

Murphy adds that the star's busy schedule would have made it impossible, too: "And when you’re going to do a show like Versace, it’s a five-month commitment, it’s a very big show, we’re shooting it all over the world. So I just don’t think with her schedule, I knew that it would never had worked. But I would love to work with her on something in the future.”

Although Gaga is hardly a surprising choice considering she starred in both of the previous seasons. Lady Gaga won a Golden Globe for her role as the singer in American Horror Story: Hotel, and currently can be seen in American Horror Story: Roanoke.

Plus, Gaga is a huge fan of Donatella. So much so that in 2013 she wrote a song for her album ARTPOP dedicated entirely to the designer. The feeling is clearly mutual and the blonde pair have attended numerous events arm in arm.

The third installment from Hollywood producer Ryan Murphy focuses for the first time on the fashion industry. The 10 episode series will look at the famous murder case of Donatella's brother and the house's founder, Gianni Versace by serial killer Andrew Cunanan . Titled ‘Versace/Cunanan: American Crime Story’ the series will reportedly begin filming in early 2017.

There is no word yet on who will be snapped up to play the other key characters. Watch this space.
