Kourtney Kardashian has received backlash after sharing a post on social media that claims wearing disposable face masks could lead to cancer and suffocation, among other things. The oldest Kardashian sister posted the claims on Instagram Stories and though she referenced the American Cancer Society, they were unfounded.
In the post, she wrote, 'Those blue masks mandated at grocery stores & airplanes are made of PTFE, a carcinogen made from synthetic fluoride. According to Cancer.org it increases the risk of liver, testicle, pancreas, kidney & breast tumors + ulcerative colitis, thyroid disease, preeclampsia and high cholesterol. High exposure can cause influenza-like symptoms and hemorrhaging in the lungs, leading to suffocation.'

Kourtney, 41, accompanied the claim with the wide-eyed and mind blown emojis...
But for starters, haemorrhaging is spelt wrong, which Kourt maybe should've flagged before she shared the info with her 102 MILLION followers. Just sayin'.
Secondly, a brief look around the American Cancer Society's website shows that no such claims were made and, in fact, the organisation writes, on the contrary, 'The face cover is meant to help protect other people, because you could spread the virus if you are infected and don’t have symptoms. At the same time, when someone else wears a face cover, it can protect you, too. Together, this can help slow the spread of COVID-19.'
Though the organisation does state that they don't recommend buying or wearing surgical masks, this is only because, 'These are in short supply in many areas and should be saved for healthcare workers who need them.;
To add fuel to the fire, the ACS has since released a statement to deny the presence of cancer-causing properties. They wrote, 'There is no evidence to support the claim that the presence of PTFE in a mask causes cancer.'
Fans and haters alike were in uproar across social media. On Twitter, one NHS worker wrote, 'It’s one thing for a random people on social media to claim that masks cause cancer... it’s another for @kourtneykardash to be doing so on her Instagram stories to >100 million followers. UTTERLY F--KING UNACCEPTABLE.'
Another Twitter user piped up with a similar sentiment, saying, 'We know she is too rich to care about COVID but encouraging fans not to wear masks to protect them from COVID is a new low. That family can’t really be this tone deaf and stupid? Is it PR?'
