From Renee Zellweger to good old Lisa Snowdon, George Clooney’s been paired off with pretty much any Hollywood star with breasts over the past 20 years. But he’s never settled down. Until now.

Rumours went into overdrive this weekend – and grown women who should know better allegedly sobbed into their Nespressos – that the actor is engaged to his girlfriend Amal Alumuddin. But we didn’t really believe them until the trusty American magazine People, who seem to have everyone’s agent on speed-dial, also reported it as fact.

‘George and Amal are trying to keep things very low-key, but they also aren’t really trying to hide this, it doesn’t seem. I think it’s like they want the people they love to know that this is real, that they plan on being together forever,’ a source told PEOPLEof the pictures of the pair in Miami showing off a massive rock.

So what do we know about the 36-year-old British lawyer who got the legendary eternal bachelor to commit? To be honest, she sounds pretty awesome:

**She’ll make that gap year you took look pretty pathetic **

Amal is very well travelled. Like, insanely so. She was born in Beirut, Lebanon, studied law at the New York University School of Law, also studied at Oxford and is now based in London. Since getting with George, she’s also been photographed jetting around the world, including a safari trip in Africa. She’s also fluent in French, Arabic and English. So that B you got in GCSE French, then...?

**She’s an overachiever – in the best possible way

**

Amal is a top humanitarian lawyer who works at Doughty Street Chambersin London and one of her clients is WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. Oh, and she also worked as an adviser to the UN special envoy Kofi Annan on Syria and has been counsel to the enquiry on the use of drones by American counter-terrorist troops. And she’s the legal advisor to the King of Bahrain. Did we forget to mention she’s also a published author?

She’s big on social media

She recently deleted her Twitter account, but before she did, she had nearly 1,800 followers, including (the admittedly eclectic combination) of Ashton Kutcher and former Australian prime minister Julia Gillard.

Everyone agrees she’s a megababe

Last year, delightfully named Tumblr blog Your Barrister Boyfriend – which tracks ‘barrister hotties’ – voted her London’s hottest female barrister. She won the (prestigious) accolade thanks to ‘achieving the seemingly unattainable ideal of contemporary femininity: she is both breathtakingly beautiful and formidably successful.’

So we've got to hand it to you George. Sounds like you've ended up with someone pretty ace.
