After years of on-again, off-again rumours and countless vague yet leading hints from the show’s lead actresses, it was finally confirmed last week that a third Sex and the City film is off the cards for the foreseeable future.
When Sarah Jessica Parker, Carrie Bradshaw herself, described the project as ‘over,’ a clutch of stories appeared online, all seeking to attach the blame to various parties. Having very publicly revealed herself to be ‘disappointed’ at the news, SJP appeared exempt from the (heavily manicured) finger-pointing. This being a franchise about four friends who are women, though, the tabloids seemed desperate to revive the narrative of in-fighting and female rivalry. Enter the Daily Mail, with an ‘exclusive’ story bearing the headline: ‘Sex and the City 3 is TORPEDOED by Kim Cattrall’s outrageous demands, just weeks before movie was set to start filming, leaving Sarah Jessica Parker and the rest of the girls in the lurch.’ Phew.
The article went on to report that Cattrall had refused to reprise the role of Samantha Jones unless Warner Brothers agreed to produce a handful of other projects she’d been working on, leading the studio to come to an impasse. A ‘source’ had told the newspaper that ‘the only reason this movie isn’t being made is because of Kim Cattrall […] Kim had the audacity to tell Warner Bros that she would only do this if they made other movies she had in development. Ridiculous. Who does she think she is – George Clooney?’ (side note: all unreasonable requests should henceforth be responded to with the cutting phrase, ‘Who do you think you are – George Clooney?’)
Channelling her SATC alter-ego’s nous for public relations, Kim was quick to respond to the headlines on her Twitter account. ‘The only “DEMAND” I ever made was that I didn’t want to do a 3rd film,’ she wrote, ‘and that was back in 2016.’ When a fan tweeted that others shouldn’t knock the star for sticking to her guns on the project, she replied with an ‘Amen.’
Kristen Davis, aka Charlotte York, has since responded to the news with an Instagram post, describing the third film’s demise as ‘deeply frustrating.’
‘It is true that we are not going to be able to make a 3rd film. I wish that we could have made the final chapter, on our own terms, to complete the stories of our characters,’ she wrote. ‘It is deeply frustrating not to be able to share that chapter (beautifully written by MPK) with all of you.’
