Khaleesi, Daenerys, Mother of Dragons. Whatever you want to call her, she's hands (and swords) down the coolest character in Game of Thrones. We won't give too much away, but charging into slave cities, liberating the people and making them so enamoured with her that they immediately want to be her humble servants, she's pretty wicked – in the good way wicked.
That's why Lucy Hinsley, 22, has spent £2,410 on dressing like Daenerys. £900 of that has gone on hair bleaching and over a grand (you do the maths) on crafting the outfits her idol wears in different scenes of the HBO fantasy series.
Handmaking that blue dress and* those* Dothraki leathers, she decided on Daenerys because she felt a strong affinity with her: 'I had always been in awe of her character. 'It just seemed like the perfect fit. I thought perhaps I could be just like this amazing woman after all. I felt an intense connection with her character. I feel like Daenerys and I have travelled along the same path to finding myself. We are both fighting for something.'
Lucy, who has had her hair fall out because she's bleached it so many times in a bid to imitate Khaleesi's white-blonde mop (clue: Emilia Clarke wears a wig), also relates to her because of the bullying they both experienced. 'If I ever did speak my mind at school, my classmates would tease me and take the mick out of me so I coped by retreating into myself,' she's revealed. 'In retrospect, I was exactly like Daenerys at the start of Game of Thrones when she is intimidated by her brother, Viserys Targaryen. 'In a parallel way, I was intimated by my classmates at school but eventually I would come out of my shell just like Daenerys.'
And Comic Con is now her opportunity to do that: 'Everyone at the convention thought my look was amazing, I was so chuffed. A few people came up to me and thought I was Emilia Clarke. It was an incredible feeling.'
It makes sense; if Madonna's coolest outfit in the past five years has been her costume of Khaleesi, you know you're doing it right.
