With the live-action adaptation of Beauty and the Beast around the corner, and a Mary Poppins sequel in the works, Disney has just thrown another revival of a classic tale into the mix: this time, it's The Nutcracker.
Based upon the book The Nutcracker and the Mouse King by E. T. A. Hoffman, the much-loved studio's take upon the story (which in turn inspired Tchaikovsky's enduring ballet) will be titled The Nutcracker And The Four Realms (confused yet?) and will bring the world of talking toys and gingerbread soldiers to life. Most excitingly, it will also star Keira Knightley as the Sugar Plum Fairy.
The world was introduced to the story back in 1816, and has been enchanted by the tale of Clara, a young girl who gets the surprise of her life when her new Nutcracker doll takes her on an adventure, ever since.
Clara is set to be played by Mackenzie Foy, best known for her role as Bella and Edward’s daughter, Renesmee, in Twilight: Breaking Dawn and as a younger version of Jessica Chastain's character in the Oscar-winning Interstellar. Also onboard are Morgan Freeman and ballerina (and Lemonade video star) Misty Copeland. Lasse Hallström is set to direct it, and with her track record of working on Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, Chocolat and The Cider House Rules, we’re happy to know that the movie is in extremely good hands.
Although the release date hasn’t been determined as of yet, it’s safe to say that we’ll be keeping our eyes glued to IMDb from now on...
