And there we were, thinking that Katy Perry's big news of 2020 would be a new album or her wedding to Orlando Bloom. Instead, she took the world by surprise overnight, by announcing that she is pregnant.
Like Beyoncé before her (who announced her pregnancy during a performance and red carpet appearance at an award ceremony) Katy ensured that all eyes were on her ahead of the announcement, revealing the news at the end of her new music video for song Never Worn White via a shot of her with a growing bump. Shortly after, she took to Twitter to acknowledge the news.
'OMG,' she wrote. 'So glad I don't have to suck it in anymore, or carry around a big purse lol.'
In case of any doubt, she clarified her comments via a livestream with fans later on. 'There's a lot that's happening this summer', she explained. 'Not only will I be giving birth, literally, and figuratively… to something you guys have been waiting for.'
'I'm excited, we're excited, and happy. It's probably the longest secret I've ever had to keep. I thought I would tell you guys in the best way through a piece of music.'
Never Gone White is not the lead single for her forthcoming album. Nevertheless, it felt an appropriate way for Katy to tell her fans about her good news.
'It's a good way to start out, ' she says. 'I had to reveal it [the pregnancy] at some point. It's getting pretty obvious.'
This will be Katy's first child. Orlando, star of Lord Of The Rings and Pirates of the Caribbean, has one son with his ex-wife Miranda Kerr.
