Katy Perry has reneged on her pervious claim she's not a feminist by telling an interviewer she actually* is* a feminist.
When asked if she is one, she responded: 'I used to not really understand what that word meant and now that I do, it just means that I love myself as a female and I also love men.'
'I'm a strong woman' she told Australia's Today Show. (Start watching below at 1.29)
Um, hasn't she listened to Beyoncé's Flawless? Chimamanda Ngozi Adichiesummarises the definition of feminism and it makes a lot of sense. Plus, it's snappy and easily memorable: 'Feminist: a person who believes in the social, political and economic equality of the sexes'
Maybe Katy only remembered the 'I woke up like this' refrain. It is a little bit catchier, we'll admit.
This is some progress from the Dark Horse singer. Two years back, she told Billboard: 'I am not a feminist, but I do believe in the strength of women.'
And, importantly, Katy Perry's thoughts on feminism aren't anywhere near the biggest problem facing women right now.
