The celebrity breakup procedure is pretty formulaic. First come the cryptic Instagram posts hinting that the relationship is no more, then comes the official statement, and finally, the post breakup glow up photoshoot – usually on a beach or a yacht somewhere.
The media frenzy around breakups is huge. Liked posts, tweets and Instagram pictures are analysed in great detail to try and squeeze out more information about why the pair broke up, if they’re seeing anyone new and how they’re really coping.
Remember when everyone thought Love Island runners up Molly-Mae Hague and Tommy Fury had broken up just because they hadn’t posted a picture together in a few days, it seems that’s where our obsession with celebrity breakups has got to.
So is it any surprise that notoriously private couple Katie Holmes and Jamie Foxx didn’t feel the need to shout from the rooftops when they broke up? The couple’s six-year relationship was so low key that when news of their split started trending on Twitter this morning, it was the first some people heard of them ever being together.
A source told E! News that the pair hadn’t been together since May, and last week Foxx was seen holding hands with pop singer Sela Vave who posted the actor on her Instagram feed on July 1 with the caption; ‘I am so grateful to this man! Thank you so much @iamjamiefoxx for everything you do and for believing in me. #feelingblessed’
Now, the average person probably won’t be approached for a statement post breakup (just speaking for the majority here) but we all notice when the friend of ours who posts the ‘super cute’ things her boyfriend does for her every day suddenly stops posting him, and either goes silent or starts posting Instagram quotes (‘If you can't handle me at my worst, then you don't deserve me at my best’) and trying to prove how much fun she is having alone by snapping drunken 3am boomerangs.
Most of us know that friends are incredibly important when you go through any hardship, and breakups can be seriously traumatic, but they’ll be there for you whether you’ve been posting about your relationship all day every day or not.
So, as tempting as it is to thrust your new love in everyone’s faces (hello pictures across candle lit dinner tables and screenshots of soppy texts) there’s something to be said for keeping it all a little more low key. That way if it doesn't work out, you can go at least five minutes without people asking how your ex is doing, and why they haven’t seen any videos of you guys spooning lately.
