Who watched Titanic at the weekend?
Yes, Saturday night saw the return of the Nineties film we all remember crying for weeks and weeks over; the film that cemeted our lifelong love for Leo and Kate; the only film we've ever seen more than twice in the cinema; and the film that has ensured standing at the bow of any boat has never been quite the same... [I'M FLYIIIING!]
Unsurprisingly, of course, we discovered this weekend that Titanic still has the power to move us. Because yes we cried, and yes we're still crying – not least since we remembered the time Kate Winslet admitted: 'I think he could have actually fit on that bit of the door'.
(Moving swiftly on before we cry some more...)
Excitingly though, some new footage has come to light – of Kate Winslet's Titanic screen test. In it she stars as Rose deWitt Bukater opposite... erm... Elton from Clueless. (Or, Jeremy Sisto.)
Being honest, it isn't great... No, no we don't mean Kate, Kate is fantastic. But the chemistry between the two is sorta ZILCH. In fact, the whole thing is rather cringe. (Read: very cringe.)
Watch it and try not to weep again – with laughter, this time, at the #awkwardness:
On 9th June we wrote...
It’s impossible to imagine Titanic without Kate Winslet in her practically iconic role as the aristocratic Rose deWitt Bukater. However, this could well have been the case, with Kate recently revealing the extreme lengths she went to to secure a spot on that floating door (which was definitely wide enough for two…)
Rewind to 1996 when casting was in process for James Cameron’s blockbuster, and Kate was far from the award-winning, bankable star that she is today. With just a handful of roles in the likes of Heavenly Creatures, Sense and Sensibility and Jude to her name, she had to do some serious grafting in order to win over the director.
In a recently re-surfaced interview with Rolling Stone magazine, the actress revealed that after reading Titanic’s script, she ‘closed the script, wept floods of tears and said, “Right, I’ve absolutely got to be a part of this. No two ways about it.”’
In her single-minded pursuit of her dream role, Kate managed to obtain Cameron’s phone number from her agent, and managed to get through to him via his car phone (retro, we know.)
‘[James] was on the freeway, and he said, “I’m going somewhere.” And I think he pulled over, and I said, “I just have to do this, and you are really mad if you don’t cast me.”’ Slightly extreme, but definitely worth it – we’d probably do the same to land a role opposite ‘90s Leonardo DiCaprio.
Her dedication paid off, and she managed to land an audition, which she followed up by sending the director a bunch of roses with the note ‘From your Rose.’ What followed was a part in one of the highest grossing movies of all time, and the beginnings of a beautiful friendship with her co-star Leo - who initially wasn't so keen to get on board with the project, so to speak...
To win him over, Kate put her, ahem, investigative skills to good use by discovering where DiCaprio was staying at the Cannes Film Festival and then cornering him in his hotel room. 'I was thinking, "I'm going to persuade him to do this, because I'm not doing it without him, and that's all there is to it"', she told Rolling Stone. '"I will have him"' There you have it: concrete proof that Kate Winslet is our number one spirit animal.
Speaking on USA Today recently, Winslet explained ‘James took a risk in casting me. A lot of my contemporaries – Uma Thurman, Gwyneth Paltrow, Winona Ryder – were much more likely candidates. I got lucky.’
Don’t be so modest, Kate - we’re pretty sure that your impressive acting talents had a lot to do with it, too...
