Harry and Meghan might have stepped down from their senior royal duties - but that certainly hasn't affected their Instagram game. Even though their Insta account - @sussexroyal - was only set up in April last year, they have just surpassed the amount of followers Kate and William have on @kensingtonroyal (even though that account was set up in 2015).
At the time of writing, @sussexoyal has 11,032,000 million followers, whereas @kensingtonroyal is just behind at 11, 256,000 million followers.
Since their shock announcement earlier this month, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been rapidly gaining followers. (The last time they had a spike this big was when their son, Archie, was born in May.) In fact, it's estimated that the pair could make as much as £26,510 per post if they were to start doing #ads.
Harry and Meghan started their own account on April 2nd 2019, and royal fans were thrilled, especially since we hadn’t seen Meghan on Instagram since she closed down her lifestyle site The Tig and social media accounts during the early stages of her relationship with Prince Harry.
One man who wasn’t thrilled by the news was Kevin Keiley, a 55-year-old driving instructor who had been using the handle @sussexroyal on Instagram (he lives in West Sussex and supports Reading Football Club who are known as the royals), but was unceremoniously booted off the account. Yikes.
‘I got a jokey text from my son which said 'Ha ha, I see your handle has gone then,’ he said in an interview, according to The Daily Express.
‘I thought “What's that all about?” He said “Look on Instagram” so I looked on Instagram and suddenly my handle wasn't @sussexroyal anymore.’
