Guess What Kate Middleton Gave The Queen For Christmas!

Kate Middleton and The Queen

It's a pretty tough question... We mean, we have trouble buying presents for our own significant other, let alone their family. What – what on earth – would we get if our significant other's family included The Queen...?

This was a legitimate question for Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge when she spent her very first Christmas at Sandringham in 2011. Because naturally the newly-wed wanted to get it right (and let's be honest, you can hardly buy the monarch a candle...).

'I can remember being at Sandringham, for the first time, at Christmas. And I was worried what to give the Queen as her Christmas present,' Catherine revealed in her first solo interview for a documentary celebrating the Queen's 90th birthday. 'I was thinking, "Gosh, what should I give her?"'

It is too adorable to imagine the Duchess fretting over such a conundrum (as we imagine we would too) though it's hardly surprising to learn she nailed it in the end.

'I thought, "I'll make her something." Which could have gone horribly wrong. But I decided to make my granny's recipe of chutney.

'I was slightly worried about it,' Catherine continued, 'but I noticed the next day that it was on the table.'

Which, of course, is just as we thought; Catherine never fails to get the Royal seal of approval.

'I think such a simple gesture went such a long way for me,' she went on to say. 'And I've noticed since she's done that on lots of occasions and I think it just shows her thoughtfulness, really, and her care in looking after everybody.'

The documentary, which includes a number of other anecdotes about the Queen – such as what Prince George adorably calls her – is set to air on ITV at 8pm this Easter Sunday.

Which leaves us with another very important question... which chocolate egg do you buy for the Queen?
