Kate Middleton Does Athleisure In £185 Leggings

How does a royal wear the athleisure trend? Yesterday, the Duchess of Cambridge answered that particular sartorial query on a visit to the National Tennis Centre; her first solo appearance since her third pregnancy was announced by Kensington Palace in September.

Kate, a well-known aficionado of the sport who became a patron of the Lawn Tennis Association last December, dropped in on a ‘Tennis for Kids’ training session attended by children aged between five and eight. Her occasion-appropriate outfit provided a major contrast to her typical ‘on duty’ style formula (read: colourful shift dresses and coats paired with court shoes) but was certainly higher end than the typical gym kit.

The Duchess’s black and white tapered 'Tuxedo' leggings are from Monreal London, a brand established in 2013 by tennis player turned designer Stefani Grosse, and are thought to be priced at £185. Other famous fans include the likes of Victoria Beckham and Elle MacPherson, and this isn’t the first time Kate has been seen wearing the label – though her younger sister, Pippa, was spotted in it first, so we can only speculate as to whether she passed on the recommendation…

Monreal certainly puts the ‘luxe’ in sports luxe: when Grosse was unable to find workout gear that would look just as good off court as it would on, she decided to branch out into design, with a brand ethos that places equal value on fashion and function.

Kate paired her leggings and sports top (from another sportswear label, Playbrave) with £180 VaporMax trainers by Nike. A considerable step up from the £50 white Superga pumps usually favoured by the Duchess, these particular kicks were described by the brand as their ‘most innovative sneaker yet’ when they dropped – and immediately sold out – in March this year. Further proof of their fashion kudos? The same collection included a collaboration with avant garde label Comme des Garcons. If this spells a new, athleisure-friendly era for Kate Middleton’s style, we’re here for it.

According to LTA coach Sam Richardson, the Duchess was seeking tips for helping her son George with his sporting skills.

‘She asked what kind of stuff [George] should be doing. He is interested in tennis, but being four, he just wants to whack the ball. You have to wait for them to show interest,’ Sam said.
