Unpicking The Potential Awkwardness Of The Karlie Kloss/Joshua Kushner Wedding

Congratulations are in order for Karlie Kloss, who has just announced her engagement to long-term boyfriend Joshua Kushner. The model, coder and on-off Taylor Swift best friend revealed the news on Instagram while on vacation in Italy (with Paul McCartney and Meghan Markle’s close pal Misha Nonoo, of all people), posting a sunset selfie with her now-fiancé, gushing: ‘I love you more than I have words to express. Josh, you’re my best friend and my soulmate. I can’t wait for forever together. Yes a million times over.’ A further Snapchat post showed off a staggering diamond engagement band. But wait, why does the name Kushner sound so familiar? Because Karlie’s new fiancé is the younger brother of Jared Kushner, of Trump White House advisor fame, meaning that her future sister-in-law is none other than Ivanka Trump.

Karlie and Ivanka appear to have enjoyed a close friendship: in 2016, the pair were pictured attending the US Open and the White House Correspondents’ Dinner together. However, while Karlie hasn’t yet said anything overtly anti-Trump on record, she did post a picture of herself casting a ballot in the 2016 election, using the pro-Clinton hashtag #ImWithHer. It’s not clear whether the pair’s differing political views have affected their relationship - but could the inevitable presence of Ivanka and Jared make for a potentially awkward wedding reception?

Let’s not forget that the bride counts a number of A-listers who haven’t shied away from criticising the Trump administration among her inner circle. One of her closest friends is fellow model Gigi Hadid who, along with her sister Bella, has attended protests around the world against Trump's immigration policy, and even did some not so flattering impersonations of the First Lady while presenting at the 2016 American Music Awards. Another pal is Serena Williams, who has been the subject of a handful of intrusive and bizarre comments from the President over the years.

However, a number of Karlie's potential guests are not so forthcoming when it comes to talking politics. She's recently been spotted hanging out with our very own Princess Beatrice, who (as per the usual royal protocol) you certainly won't hear sharing opinions on world leaders any time soon, while sometime BFF Taylor Swift famously won't be drawn when it comes to opening up about her political leanings. All we can say is that whoever is in charge of the seating plan certainly has a big job on their hands...
