An era when the Time's Up and #MeToo movements are dominating the headlines almost daily is an unlikely one for a self-proclaimed feminist to advocate walking down a runway wearing nothing but lingerie. But Victoria Secret's model Karlie Kloss says such fashion shows are particularly significant today.
In an interview with The Telegraph, the twenty-five-year-old said that shows such as the renowned Victoria's Secret spectacles are 'so relevant in the world we live in today'.
'There’s something really powerful about a woman who owns her sexuality and is in charge,' she said.
'A show like this celebrates that and allows all of us to be the best versions of ourselves. Whether it’s wearing heels, make-up or a beautiful piece of lingerie – if you are in control and empowered by yourself, it’s sexy.'
She went on to say how she loves investing in powerful scents and pieces of lingerie but is careful to ensure it's always on her own terms. 'I like to set a positive example, so would never be part of something I didn’t believe in.’
Indeed, setting a positive example is something Karlie is very much known for, not least through her tech programme 'Kode with Klossy'. Its mission is to 'empower girls to learn to code and become leaders in tech', which it aims to achieve through hosting girls’ coding summer camps, awards career scholarships to young women developers, and through helping to create a 'national community' to encourage more women and girls to enter the tech sphere.
'Before my first coding class, the idea that I could build something with code seemed nearly impossible,' Karlie says on the site, 'but after only a couple of courses, I was working with my classmates to program a small drone.'
She continued, 'I realized that, just like art and fashion, code is about creativity, and that women who have these skills have the power to shape our future - and often have. Women are essential in forging digital progress and knowing how to code is the key to exploring and creating the newest frontier.'
How right she is. We're signing up for that coding class pronto
Blake Lively, a.k.a. Serena van der Woodson in Gossip Girl, completely reinvented her last name. She was born Blake Ellender Brown, but Lively suits her just perfectly.
