Once in a while, movies come along that just stay with you. You can’t stop thinking about it, or dissecting dialogue with your pals and issues are brought to the fore rarely (if ever) portrayed on film. Case in point: this year’s Oscar winner – Moonlight.
Ten years later, the cult dramedy Juno - focused on a 16-year-old girl faced with an unwanted pregnancy - is definitely in this film club. A genuinely LOL film that deals with teenage pregnancy and adoption? Not an easy sell among the Hollywood bigwigs.
It’s hard not to fall completely in love with Juno Duffy - played by the grossly underrated talent Ellen Page – with sarcy lines like, ‘Oh, and she inexplicably mails me a cactus every Valentine's Day. And I'm like, "Thanks a heap coyote ugly. This cactus-gram stings even worse than your abandonment.”’
So to mark Juno’s tenth anniversary, director Jason Reitman is organising a live read of the script featuring only the female members of the cast, including Ellen Page and Jennifer Garner (with women taking up the roles played by the likes of Jason Bateman and Michael Cera), to raise funds for Planned Parenthood.
The Oscar-winning film's subject matter is important now more than ever before – it's hard to ignore headlines regarding the threat of women's reproductive rights on a daily basis.
'Like many other people, I felt like I wanted to do something. I wanted to find a way to contribute to the causes that have never felt more important,' Reitman told Entertainment Weekly. 'It occurred to me that I have this show that could be used as a tool to not only raise money for causes that need the help, but could serve as an opportunity for a group like Planned Parenthood to connect with an audience who can be presented with new ideas, or even an action item.'
'If there was any confusion about whether Juno was pro-choice or pro-life, this should settle that,' Reitman continued. 'Juno had a choice, and that was the most important part.'
