Everything (We Think) We Know About Jim Broadbent's Upcoming Role In Game Of Thrones

The famously shut lip Game of Thrones announced Jim Broadbent as a new cast member in August. And he may have already pissed the producers off by outing their private storylines in a recent interview with Screencrush. We’ve deciphered the clues to work out what he’s actually (maybe) doing in the new series. Warning: possible spoilers to follow.

Who’s he playing?

Officially, Jim is playing an archmaester, saying ‘I’m an old professor character’. But having also admitting that he shares his scenes with John Bradley, who plays Sam Tarley, GOT nerds have unofficially decided this means that he is playing Maester Marwyn, a character featured in the original George R.R. Martin novels. However, we all know that GOT has departed from the books since Season 5. So realistically he could be any any old archmaester.

Is his character actually important?

Yes, is the short answer to this question. Originally, the hush hush production said that he was joining the show as a ‘significant’ character. But now Jim has confirmed that he appears in five out of seven episodes, and he has ‘major’ scenes in each one. Pretty important, then, we’d say.

What happens to him?

According to those who have the time to consider these things deeply, Season 7 will most likely pick up with Marwyn meeting Sam, and Sam telling him about everything he has seen beyond the Wall with the White Walkers. He will then allegedly set off to find the Mother of Dragons. However, Broadbent did admit that he only shot in the studio rather than on location, and none of his scenes involved CGI, which apparently means that he won’t be meeting up with Daenerys in this series at least.

When will it be on?

Unfortunately Jim doesn’t have the answer to this one. But co-star Liam Cunningham recently said that GOT won’t be back in time for its usual spring premier but that viewers should expect a July return.
