Wine-throwing, tantrums and affairs: Married At First Sight Australia{ =nofollow}has it all. And so it's no surprise UK audiences have been binging the show - which was first filmed in 2018 - over lockdown. But one thing which hasn't gone unnoticed by many UK viewers is how women are negatively portrayed on the show.

Usually, the women - like Ines and Jessika - come across far more manipulative than the men, painted as scheming homewreckers who are confident and reckless enough to make the first move when starting their affairs. But, speaking to Grazia, Jessika says that Dan was the one who first expressed interest - but that didn’t make the final cut.

‘We're still very much living in a man's world, which I find a little bit upsetting,’ Jess tells Grazia, over Zoom from her home on the Gold Coast. ‘And what people don't see, because things get edited out, was that the first dinner party when I met Dan, he actually initiated a conversation. And they showed this at our reunion - they obviously couldn’t air it - but the things he was saying to me were so X-rated.’

Jess - who says she still speaks to both original husband, Mick, and Dan - continues: ‘When that party ended, my executive producer grabbed me and said “Jess, can I talk to you for a second. Dan has said that he would like to get your number.” And I said, “Well, tomorrow night the commitment ceremony, can I just say how him and Tamara are?” Like, I don't want to go spoiling anything. And then the next day, obviously, tomorrow, there's nothing there.'

'But that was all edited out,' she says, 'everything was edited out to make it look like I was the one that was snowballing towards him and desperate, but it was very much him as well.’

Jess also felt that the portrayal of Heidi and Mick’s relationship on screen was also misogynistic .’I feel that sex is something that you share with somebody that you care about,' Jess says. 'And even though you're on a show, and you have to allude a little bit to the fact you have slept together, the amount of times the producers showed their sex and what Mike would say about her. And I do respect him, I think he's a great guy. But why [did producers] have to make it like that? It's inappropriate. It's a little bit degrading to females.’

Jess adds she wanted to break-up with Mick and announce her affair with Dan sooner. 'I remember being in hysterics one night before a commitment ceremony, I was saying to my producers "Why can't we just say tonight that we want to be together? Surely I can't come up with another elaborate bullshit lie. What do you guys want me to say? Because I can't do this anymore,"' she says. 'It was getting to a point where it was just nasty. I'm all for love and I was all for going for what I wanted, but I didn't want to be mean and I was being mean. Mick really wanted to go home. And that was the only time I sort of realised what was going on.'

When Elizabeth was shown comments made about her weight by Sam at the finale, Jess says she felt 'disgusted' for her. ‘People don't understand that these sorts of things just stay with you forever, until people stop thinking about you on the show,' she says. 'And I felt disgusted. I felt so horrible for Lizzie. Because you know what she was so confident at the hens night and throughout her audition video, she felt herself, that she felt beautiful. And she was made to feel belittled by a man who, I mean, he's got obviously rocks for brains and a stick-on Lego beard.’
