Jess Glynne is facing backlash on social media after using an offensive slur about trans people. The Hold My Hand singer made the comment about a 't********* strip club' during an interview on comedian Mo Gilligan's podcast. The clip sees her discuss an evening she spent in a queer space with friends. After the interview was shared on Twitter, lots of people pointed out why the term is never OK to say, and why it's highly offensive to trans people.
Writer Juno Dawson, who is trans, tweeted: ‘The t word is only used to describe something ugly or unrefined. Worse, it’s the last word too many women have heard before they died. I don’t know if Jess was mindful of how this word is used to hurt us.’
Sister Sister, a drag queen from the second season of RuPaul's Drag Race UK said: 'A slur that rolls out as easily as it did suggests that #JessGlynne doesn’t consider the t word a slur at all. The way it’s such an outdated term being used by someone within the LGBT community is a massive shame.' (Jess has dated both men and women in the past.)
Harpies Strip Club founder Lucia Blayke tweeted: ‘As the owner of a “t***** strip club.” I’d ask Jess Glynne not to use slurs to describe us or call us “men in wigs.” In fact just leave us out of your funny anecdotes, we are not a laughing stock, we are human beings.’
Presenter Hattie Pearson said, 'What I find really astonishing about Jess Glynne’s transphobic slur is that so many will have signed it off to get to the point of broadcast... Podcast editor, producer, presenter, PR team etc. Transphobia is not ok. We are all equal. Call it out when you see/hear it.'
As per the Independent, the full podcast episode, which was uploaded on Friday March 5, appears to have been removed from streaming services including Spotify, PlayFM and Apple Podcasts.
Grazia have contacted Jess' and Mo Gilligan's reps for comment.
