Twenty years ago, Jennifer Aniston walked down the aisle and married Brad Pitt. Our hearts broke a little bit – what about us, Brad? – but we also shed a tear of happiness that Hollywood’s most beautiful couple had found each other. It may not have worked out, but their firm friendship has gone the distance, making us feel nostalgic for that big day on July 29th, 2000. Trust us, it wasn’t your classic shindig.
According to reports, the wedding bill came in at a cool $1 million, with the pair marrying on a cliff in Malibu California. Renting a five-acre estate overlooking the Pacific Ocean from TV executive Marcy Carsey, offered the private couple the opportunity to keep their day away from the press, and for the most part they succeeded: few images of the ceremony have ever appeared publicly. This was hard fought: airspace above the estate was restricted, to ensure that helicopters could not snap the couple say their I dos, and the reception itself moved to the privacy of a large white marquee, filled with lanterns and offering room for everyone.
Guests included Courteney Cox and Matthew Perry, Jennifer’s Friends co-stars, as well as Cameron Diaz, Salma Hayek and Ed Norton. But Matt Le Blanc didn’t make it: he was stuck on a film shoot, much like an episode from the show in which his character, Joey, almost missed out on Monica and Chandler’s wedding. Luckily for everyone, this time he wasn’t officiating.
Guests were, reports say, asked to sign a confidentiality agreement in advance. Keeping half of Hollywood safe and secret did not come cheap: security is said to have cost in the ballpark of $100,000.
What we do know, if that it was beautiful. Jennifer wore a satin and silk beaded gown designed by Lawrence Steele, with Manolo Blahnik shoes. Her bridesmaids going with green chiffon. Brad wore a Heidi Slimane tuxedo, and his groomsmen were decked out in Prada.
Florist La Premiere provided a whopping 50,000 flowers, including roses, tulips and wisteria. Jennifer’s bouquet was made up of gorgeous Dutch Vandela roses. A gospel choir sang songs from 13, Blur’s 1999 album, and the menu included caviar, pizza and champagne. The reception ended with a beautiful fireworks display.
Jen has remained pretty tight-lipped about the ceremony, but did tell Vanity Fair that it was a ‘fantastic’ event. She is aid to have cried during the service, which featured vows in which Brad promised to ‘split the difference on the thermostat.’ Jennifer, though, vowed to always make him his favourite banana milkshake.
Their marriage lasted for five years. Hollywood’s golden couple were not meant to be. But they’ll always have memories of one hell of a special day.
