We’re Not Crying At James Blunt’s New Music Video, You Are

We've come a long way since You're Beautiful.

In 2004, James Blunt's You're Beautiful became the undisputed earworm of the year. An ode to a woman glimpsed in a crowded place, the song catapulted James into the public consciousness. And, while his sales have never quite reached those heights again, he's still releasing music, touring and totally owning those Twitter trolls. But today he's been making us emotional, thanks to the release of his new music video.

Like the video for You're Beautiful, it focuses closely on James's face and zooms out slowly. But there is no rainy seascape and a white set. Instead, we meet his father, Charles Blount, who is dying of stage 4 chronic kidney disease.

If the video itself doesn't make you all weepy, the lyrics will probably do the job:

‘I’m not your son. You’re not my father,

We’re just two grown men saying goodbye.

No need to forgive. No need to forget.

I know your mistakes and you know mine.

And while you’re sleeping, I’ll try to make you proud.

So daddy, won’t you close your eyes.

Don’t be afraid. It’s my turn to chase the monsters away.’

Has anyone got any tissues?

Filmed in Oxfordshire, and directed by Vaughn Arnell - it was all the idea of James himself. 'Monsters is for my father who has stage 4 chronic kidney disease, so I asked if he’d like to be in the video with me', says James.

The song is included on James's current album, Once Upon A Mind, which James will be plugging with a Royal Albert Hall gig in April. We'll have finished crying by then. Hopefully.
