Ivanka Trump has garnered criticism online after posting an ‘inappropriate’ photo to her Twitter account, showing the 35-year-old sat at the President’s desk in the Oval Office.
The photo was taken after the First Daughter attended a roundtable discussion about women in the workplace, along with her father Donald Trump and the Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau.
‘A great discussion with two world leaders about the importance of women having a seat at the table!’ she captioned the image.
The photo immediately proved controversial on social media, particularly given the fact that Ivanka’s place in her father’s administration has not yet been made clear. Many Twitter users asked why Ivanka was sitting in a chair reserved for the person elected as President of the United States, and pointed out the problem of nepotism.
‘It’s inappropriate for you to be in those meetings and seated at that desk. You are not the POTUS,’ replied one Twitter user.
‘Did the US elect Ivanka Trump as President? Why is she sitting at one of the world’s most iconic desks?’ asked another.
‘You did nothing to gain that seat at the table other than being born to a rich father with a tie that’s too long,’ tweeted journalist Steven Horowitz.
Other Twitter users were quick to point out the irony of her message, reminding Ivanka that the last President to recruit a cabinet more white and male than her father’s was Ronald Reagan in 1981.
Last week, the President hit out at US department store Nordstrom on his Twitter accounts, writing that they had behaved 'unfairly' to Ivanka by dropping her fashion line.
'My daughter Ivanka has been treated so unfairly by @Nordstrom,' the President tweeted from both his personal and official White House account. 'She is a great person -- always pushing me to do the right thing! Terrible!'
A statement from the store reiterated that the decision to stop selling Ivanka's brand was purely a commercial one 'based on performance', explaining that 'Over the past year, and particularly the last half of 2016, sales of the brand have steadily declined to the point where it didn't make good business sense for us to continue with the line for now.'
The controversy continued when the President’s senior advisor Kellyanne Conway appeared to use her platform to promote Ivanka’s brand, urging people to ‘go buy Ivanka’s stuff’ during a recent television interview.
