How To Move To Canada Like Harry And Meghan

When Harry and Meghan - the Duke and Duchess of Sussex - returned to England following a six week break to Canada, there was speculation that the couple, and their young son Archie, had enjoyed the experience so much that they were already discussing a return. The likelihood of this increased tenfold mere hours later, when the couple announced that they were to take a step back from their lives as senior royals, and would divide their time between the UK and North America. Meghan's links to LA and New York mean that the couple may yet settle in the US, but Canada is an option made more likely by its place in the Commonwealth. But how do you mimic the couple - as well as more than 6,000 Brits a year - and move to Canada yourself? Here's what you need to know.

It's not actually that complicated, but it does come down to your age. If you're over the age of 30, you'll need to apply for permanent residency via the Express Entry system. The process will assess what you would bring to the table by asking about your education, your professional qualifications and experiences, as well as your French skills. This is all brought together to calculate a score out of 1200. It may, for example, depend on the industries are calling out for recruits in: engineers and accountants were top of the list in 2018.

From there, you'll need a work permit, and the process takes around five weeks so don't pack quite yet. You'll need to use a Labour Market Impact Assessment number proving that you have a job offer, that you are qualified, and that there's a reason why it has to be you doing it: if the assessment team believes that a Canadian could do the job better, then you may be staying at home. Some roles, however, don't require a permit: the Canadian Government website has a list.

Between 18 and 30? You're in luck: there is another, slightly easier way. The International Experience Canada program accepts around 65,000 participants in a working visa scheme, with several thousand Brits among them. It's chosen randomly throughout the year, and you'll need to show that you have £2,000 to keep you going on arrival, but if you get selected then you have two years to spend enjoying the country's offerings.

Simple as that. Say hi to Harry and Meghan for us.
