It’s now confirmed that Hillary Clinton is the Democratic presidential nominee, making her the first woman in history to secure the position.
Her bid has been more than nine years in the making, following a gruelling campaign in which she met with strong resistance from rival Bernie Sanders. In the event, Sanders stepped in at the end of a roll call vote of states to back Hillary’s nomination.
The evening culminated with a slide show of US presidents, ending with an animation of shattering glass, which cleared to a video of Clinton, addressing the convention by video.
Celebrating her win, Hillary announced, 'I can’t believe we just put the biggest crack in that glass ceiling yet. And if there are any little girls out there who stayed up late to watch, let me just say, I may become the first woman president but one of you is next'.
Hillary’s husband Bill then delivered a keynote speech during which he called her his ‘best friend’ and a ‘change-maker’.
Meryl Streep also paid tribute to Hillary during the convention telling delegates, ‘What does it take to be the first female anything? It takes grit and it takes grace’.
Other highlights of the evening included a speech by Lena Dunham, who said that Hillary ‘knows we have to fight hatred of all kind, and not ignite it for the craven purpose of seeking power’.

It's a historical day in the USA today as Hillary Clinton is heralded the Democratic presidential candidate.
With extensive wins in California, New Jersey and New Mexico, Clinton beat her Democratic rival, Bernie Sanders, winning 56% of the vote, to his 43%. In doing so, Clinton became the first US female presidential candidate of a major party to be elected ever in history, and said of the victory, she had 'reached a milestone'.
'Tonight caps an amazing journey – a long, long journey,' she told supporters yesterday evening. 'It may be hard to see tonight but we are all standing under a glass ceiling right now. But don’t worry. We’re not smashing this one. Thanks to you, we’ve reached a milestone. The first time in our nation’s history that a woman will be a major party’s nominee.'
Clinton is set to battle it out against Republican presidential candidate, Donald Trump, on election day – 8th November – later on this year.
