Have you seen the film Rust and Bone? Or the documentary Blackfish? If the answer's yes to either, then you’ll be keen for Sea World and other places like it – where sea mammals like whales and dolphins are kept in captivity to perform tricks for gawping holidayers – to close.
But if you’re not already convinced of the alleged animal cruelty that goes on at Sea World, then the anti movement has one massively influential proponent in the form of Harry Styles.
Using his platform to make a statement way beyond what’s expected of him, the heartthrob drawled to his fans in San Diego (where there is a Sea World). ‘You having a good time? Hello!’ he wrote, before adding, ‘Does anybody like dolphins? Don’t go to Sea World’
The company has also invited Harry via an open letter to try out Sea World so he can make what they think is a better formed judgment, saying, ‘We invite you to see for yourself, and then decide based on facts. We are happy to open our doors, take you behind the scenes, and have our trainers and vets answer any questions you have.’
Somehow we think, at the very least, he’ll be too busy to get there – he’s on tour with One Direction until November, with none of the dates passing through the other Sea World cities of San Antonio and Orlando. Plus, even if he did have aeons of time to go along to watch loads of seals and dolpins and whales clap for their slippery suppers, would he really go back on his word like that and give Sea World the great publicity of his endorsement?
As for PETA, they’re VERY happy with Harry, and will send him a hand-printed T-shirt saying, ‘SeaWorld Kills,’ and some vegan chocolate dolphins (the only sea food they endorse, we guess) as a thank you.
