Posting a bikini selfie to her @gisposable Instagram profile, Gigi Hadid broke the news to followers that her trip to Mykonos with sisters Bella, Alana and Marielle and friends - celebrating Alana’s birthday – was cut short after their apartment ‘got robbed’. Hadid wrote that she was ‘Never going back lol’, ‘Wouldn’t recommend’ and urged readers to ‘Spend your money elsewhere.’
While Gigi herself left comment at that, father Mohamed Hadid spoke to TMZ about the incident. It sounds like the burglary happened while the girls were out and about: ‘They were out, they had their bodyguard with them’, said Mohamed. ‘They got robbed – the house was broken into’, only to be discovered on returning home, he said. He explained that just ‘personal things’ were taken – and confirmed that Gigi and Bella were both victims of the robbery. ‘Nobody got hurt, thank god’, Mohamed said, while remarking that the burglary had nonetheless shaken Gigi. ‘She called me at the airport when she was taking off. She was traumatised’, said her father.
Instagram users reacted strongly to Gigi’s post, interpreting it as a call to dissuade other travellers from visiting the island – which relies heavily on tourism for its economy. Certainly, it could be considered a little strong to swear off a whole island after one bad experience –@estebansolmat wrote ‘People get robbed in NYC too; is she never going there either?’, while @elias.patt added ‘That could happen anywhere, even in Beverly Hills. Your post is damaging and insulting for all the struggling Greek families that expect tourists to make their living.’
One thing’s for sure: the Hadid sisters didn’t hang around. Reportedly frustrated that Greek authorities weren’t taking the case seriously enough, they chartered a private plane home and are now back on terra firma. So long, Mykonos – Gigi, for one, won’t miss you.
