Gwyneth Paltrow raised eyebrows around the world last year when she started flogging a candle on Goop called This Smells Like My Vagina. But one woman allegedly had a very nasty surprise when she lit one of the candles. The Sun are reporting that an 'inferno' leapt up from the candle when Jody Thompson - who won the candle in a quiz - tried to light it.
'I’ve never seen anything like it,' Jody, who is a media consultant, told the paper. 'The whole thing was ablaze and it was too hot to touch. There was an inferno in the room.' She added, 'It could have burned the place down. It was scary at the time, but funny looking back that Gwyneth’s vagina candle exploded in my living room.' (Grazia has commented Goop for comment.)
The candle was immensely popular when it first went on sale last year, retailing for £57.
Perfumer Douglas Little - who worked on the candle with Gwyneth - said they had been overwhelmed by interest after the creation originally sold out, and mentioned one very high-profile fan. ‘We have been hounded and stalked by so many people,’ he told The Cut. ‘I saw the candle being sold on eBay for a ridiculous price. Elton John bought a ton of them. Like a lot. Like, a lot a lot. He’s a fan.’ (Wow, there must be one in every room.)
So what does this headline grabbing candle actually smell like? According to Heretic, the thoroughly Instagram-able brand behind the showstopper, we have to 'imagine a bundle of roses wrapped in suede'. It's a 'voluptuous scent of fantasy and seduction. Made with a combination of natural and safe synthetic fragrance' with top notes of bergamot, geranium and cedar, heart notes of damask rose and a base of ambrette seed.
