Jeremy Renner has given the most half-arsed apology for offending his fans after calling a co-character in Avengers: Age Of Ultron a slut. And we’re not very happy about it. At all.
Yesterday, footage of Chris Evans and Jeremy Renner showed them answering a question about the fact Black Widow – played by Scarlett Johansson – had been ‘shipped’ with their characters by fans but has now ended up with Bruce Banner.
Jeremy responded: ‘She's a slut’ and started laughing.
Chris then said: ‘I was going to say something along that line... a complete whore.’
The interviewer, from Digital Spy, then said: ‘Whatever movie she’s in, she’ll just be the sidekick, she’ll be flirting away,’ to which the guys agreed, continuing their laughter. You can watch it here:
After a fair whack of opposition to these comments, Chris has given this apology, reports The Independent: ‘Yesterday we were asked about the rumours that Black Widow wanted to be in a relationship with both Hawkeye and Captain America. We answered in a juvenile and offensive way that rightfully angered some fans. I regret it and sincerely apologise.’
As for Jeremy? Well, he’s got this sorry-not-sorry apology to give out: ‘I am sorry that this tasteless joke about a fictional character offended anyone. It was not meant to be serious in any way. Just poking fun during an exhausting and tedious press tour.’
Oh, poor Jeremy. Poor exhausted Jeremy having to fulfill his contractual obligations that will eventually secure him about $4 million (£2.6 million) while women around the world face daily harassment from people who see words like ‘slut’ and ‘whore’ legitimised by people in the public eye.
We get that internet outrage can sometimes seem pointless, but being offended by two million actors calling one female character a ‘slut’ and a ‘whore’ is pretty OK by us. Especially when you consider they play superheroes in a franchise where women – and we don’t just mean the characters – are basically overshadowed by all the main man action.
