All of the true, hardcore Spice Girls fans out there will already be aware that it’s the 20th anniversary of their first single, Wannabe, next week.
Yep, it’s been two decades (scary when you think it’s been that long, isn’t it) since they zig-a zigged their way into our otherwise spiceless lives, but unfortunately it’s going to be a whole other year to go before we get that reunion we’ve all been waiting for.
Mel B revealed that a reunion probably won’t happen until 2017 while on American chat show, Live with Kelly. She said: ‘This is the thing. It is our 20th anniversary this year and this would be the perfect year, but places get booked out so what we’ll hopefully do is plan to do something to celebrate next year.’
Is it just me, or does it sounds like they pretty much just forgot to book a venue? Absolutely gutted.
It’s very much like when you spend ages bigging up your milestone birthday party that’s like, totally going to be the tits this year because you’re going to have it in this big beautiful venue that hosts 100s more people than you’re actually friends with. So you spread the word to loads of extra people and tell them that they have to dress up and say that everyone can bring plus-ones and it's going to be SO great.
Then it gets to the week before your birthday, and you realise that neither you, your mum or your nan got around to actually booking said beautiful venue, there’s nowhere else that’s free on that night unless you’re prepared to settle for the dodgy back room of the pub down the road, so you have to call around your friends at let them know that ’soz, you can’t come to my birthday, it’s at my house now and mum says she can only cook for 8 people’.
Anyway... The reassuring news is that a reunion is definitely on the cards. Mel said, ‘What we’ll hopefully do is plan to do something to celebrate next year. But it’s something that we want to do and it will be nice to celebrate and give something back to the fans.’
She also added: ‘I’m not getting any younger. Let’s hurry up and get this done’. Hear, hear!
But while we wait for that to happen, and try to pretend that we’re just as excited by a 21st anniversary reunion as a 20th, here’s the video that made us all reaaally want to be a Spice Girl.
