How did Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney meet?

Sweeney and Powell were first tied to the Australia-based romcom, Anyone But You, in January 2023 when Deadline reported that they would be starring opposite each other. The film was released in December 2023 after an extensive promo campaign.

Sydney Sweeney shuts down romance rumours

In August 2023, Sweeney discussed the 'affair' rumours that plagued the co-stars - after pictures of them on-set sparked speculation online - in a cover interview with Variety. 'Sometimes I feel beat up by it,' she said. 'It's hard to sit back and watch, and not be able to stand up for yourself.'

She then confirmed that some of their cosy red carpet moments were part of the marketing strategy for the film. 'It's a romcom,' she added. 'That's what people want! Glen and I don't really care. We have so much fun together, and we respect each other so much; he's such a hard worker, and I'm a hard worker. We're excited for the press tour, and I literally just left ADR with him. We talk all the time like, "That's really funny."'

Powell echoed her comments in an interview with Men's Health four months later. 'When all that stuff happened, you know, publicly, it felt disorienting and unfair,' he explained. 'But what I'm realising is that's just part of this gig now.'

Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell feel like they've 'known each other forever'

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight in December 2023, Powell said it immediately felt like they'd 'known each other forever'. 'I think anybody that's been on the set realises I never get tired of talking to Sydney,' he said. 'We make each other laugh. She's awesome, obviously one of the most talented actresses we have. This move has felt like a romcom in itself because Sydney is very easy to pretend to fall in love with.'

'The wild part about being in a romcom, all the ideas of love are swirling through your head while these big romantic moments are happening. So, sometimes [it's] harder to differentiate real life and fake life.'

That same month, the two friends began the press tour for their film and attended the premiere in New York.

Romance rumours take their toll on the duo

In a December 2023 interview with Glamour, Sweeney said the tabloid drama had been 'really hard on Glen [...] because [the film] was [otherwise] such a beautiful experience'.

She then reiterated, 'I've been in a steady relationship for a really long time, which is not normal in this industry and not normal for my age.' Sweeney has been with Jonathan Davino, who is also her producing partner, since 2018 with the couple getting engaged in 2022. 'It's really great to work with someone who knows you so well,' she went on, 'who fully supports your ideas, your vision and your voice... And it's nice. I mean, who doesn't want to be with their best friend all the time?'

Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell poke fun at the rumours on SNL

During Sweeney's opening monologue on SNL, she described her alleged affair with Powell as the 'craziest rumour' about her life. 'That's obviously not true,' she said, 'me and my fiancé produced the movie together and he was there the entire shoot, and I just want to let everyone know that he's the man of my dreams and we're still together and stronger than ever.'

She then asked the SNL cameras to pan to Davino, but they panned to Powell instead. In another skit later in the show, Sweeney's character admits to cheating on her boyfriend with her boss and Powell then appears to whisk her away.

As previously mentioned, it was all part of a marketing strategy. 'That's people wanting what's on the screen off the screen, and sometimes you just have to lean into it a bit,' Powell told The New York Times in April last year. 'And it worked wonderfully. Sydney is very smart.'

Glen Powell always sings Sydney Sweeney's praises

For her Glamour Woman of the Year profile last October, Powell said Sweeney 'effortless moves through this world and [is] convincing in all these different things but also maintains her humanity'.

'Everybody knows she's talented and magnetic and beautiful, and all those things, but I think her heart's going to be what takes her the distance.'

He went on to say, 'As a friend, she's so thoughtful. Sometimes, the perception of people when they're incredibly ambitious or business-minded can be that they neglect other things in their life. She's just the opposite. The people that are in her world, in her court, she's known for taking care of them.'
