Last month, Harvey Weinstein was found guilty of third-degree rape and first-degree criminal sexual act in a New York courthouse. While he was cleared of some charges, the verdict felt like something of a vindication for the women – at least 80 - who had come forward with allegations of sexual misconduct. In the aftermath, the film producer was sent to prison via a stay in hospital, leaving his victims to contemplate how to move on with their lives after justice was served. But since 2017, another woman has been working out how to live beyond the spectre of Harvey in a very different way: his ex-wife Georgina Chapman. The British born founder of Marchesa, and mother of Harvey's children - Dashiell, 6 and India, 9 - has been finding peace, love and success on her own terms.
Last year, reports linked Georgina – who divorced Harvey in 2017 – with Oscar-winning actor Adrien Brody. The pair have met occasionally over the years, with Harvey producing two of Adrien’s films – Hollywoodland and Jailbreakers - but sparks flew when they were both guests at an event in Puerto Rico. According to a source, they kept in touch in the months that followed, and this romance has now developed into a committed relationship.
‘She and Adrien are keeping it under the radar, and neither want this to become a public spectacle,’ the source says. ‘But they have a lot in common, and he’s helped her to believe in love again.’
Before the accusations against Harvey became public, Marchesa had dressed half of Hollywood, including Anne Hathaway, Cate Blanchett and Jennifer Lopez. Indeed, actresses including Sienna Miller, Jessica Chastain and Jennifer Aniston have all stated that Harvey specifically asked them – or told them – to wear the brand. Following the separation, and as the allegations grew and grew, the brand all but disappeared from the red carpet, until 2018, when Scarlett Johansson wore one of Georgina’s dresses to the Met Gala. We can expect more from the brand, now that an element of closure has been found. ‘She just wants to move on from the ugliness,' a source explains. ‘Her Marchesa line is making a comeback and celebrities are wearing her styles again. And now, there’s no doubt that it’s on her merit. She has a reason to smile again.’
Not long after leaving Harvey, Georgina addressed the realities of being linked to someone accused of such horrifying crimes. ‘This has happened,' she said. ‘I have to own it. I have to move forward. I have moments of rage, I have moments of confusion, I have moments of disbelief.’
Those moments will, doubtless, punctuate her life and the lives of her children. But after a tough few years, she seems confident that happiness will win out. ‘She has a great, loving support system,' a source adds. ‘The wounds will never fully heal of course, but her kids have been the foundation for staying strong and focused in the face of appalling adversity.’
