Tributes have been pouring in since the death of singer George Michael was announced on Christmas Day.
The 53-year-old ‘passed away peacefully’ in Oxfordshire, according to a statement released by his family.
Michael, whose real name was Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou, was born in North London and rose to fame with school friend Andrew Ridgeley with whom he formed Wham!. The duo had four UK number ones, including the enduringly popular Last Christmas which is currently at number 16 in the singles chart. Michael then went on to have a successful solo career, releasing his debut solo album Faith in 1987.
Michael’s family broke the news in a statement issued by his publicist. “It is with great sadness that we can confirm our beloved son, brother and friend George passed away peacefully at home over the Christmas period,” it said.
“The family would ask that their privacy be respected at this difficult and emotional time. There will be no further comment at this stage.”
Many celebrities, including his Wham! bandmate, Madonna and Elton John, have taken to social media to express their sorrow and surprise at his death.
Many singers followed their Christmas Tweets with their reactions to the news.
Mark Ronson Tweeted his tribute to the singer, writing a series of posts before saying 'Needed a little more space to pay tribute to the genius of George Michael & its effect on me. If you want to read...' and adding a link to his Instagram.
Not only did the music pay tribute to the singer, but celebrities from all industries. David Walliams posted lots of Michael's iconic quotes and songs on Twitter, while others simply expressed their condolences.
