When we reach old age we'll definitely wear purple and drink brandy, just like the Jenny Joseph poem.

However, we'll also throw in a visit from George Clooney to the bucket list of later life goals.

The Oscar winner and former ER heartthrob proved just what a gent he was this weekend, by surprising an 87-year-old fan at her nursing home near Reading.

George, 57, popped by to see Pat Adams as she celebrated her birthday at Sunrise of Sonning care home in Berkshire.

General manager Malcolm Hague posted about the surprise visit on Twitter.

"We are so delighted that Pat’s wish came true," he told the Mail. "She was absolutely thrilled to meet her great icon, and it was such a lovely surprise to see George greet her with flowers and a card."

The care home's concierge Linda Jones said she was in "utter shock" to see the Hollywood star arrive.

She said resident Pat "loves George Clooney and mentions everyday how she would love to meet him".

Staff at the home regularly try to fulfill their residents' dreams as part of their Wish Upon a Star programme. But a spokesperson said they "didn't think they would be able to pull this one off".

George moved to Sonning with his human rights lawyer wife Amal in 2014. The couple are expecting twins together, a development the Ocean's Eleven star said they are "really happy and really excited" about.
