We love nothing more than a good proposal story. Whenever someone drops the bombshell they’re engaged, after we’ve ogled over the ring, the next question is always ‘how did he do it?’, and when it comes to the A-list, we’re always more intrigued about how they popped the all important question.
Considering George and Amal Clooney’s lavish, star-studded nuptials in Venice, you would assume the proposal would have been just as extravagant. However, in a new interview on The Late Show, Clooney has revealed that the moment he asked for Amal’s hand in marriage was actually pretty low-key.
Yep, the Hollywood star chose a candlelit dinner at home for their big moment.
However the proposal was far from spontaneous. “I plotted the whole thing out. I had the ring hidden behind her. I had music playing,” Clooney told David Letterman.
“Everything was planned out and I'd cooked dinner. And she comes in, and she's just come back from London, and she's all dressed up. Usually she's dressed up and and now she's like, well maybe we'll just order in. And I go, no I made dinner,” Clooney explained.
So far, so normal, but the way he presented the ring was pretty unique. Clooney recalled how when Amal went to the kitchen after dinner, he blew out the candles, and on her return asked her to grab the lighter from a box on the table.
“She reached out, she pulled out the box, and I've got just the ring sitting in there. And, she pulls it out and she looks at it, and she's like 'it's a ring,'” Clooney said.
“I got down on my knee and said 'I couldn't imagine spending the rest of my life without you'. I literally said, 'look I hope the answer is yes because I need an answer, I'm 52-years-old and I could throw my hip out soon if I don't get an answer,'” Clooney joked.
Luckily for Clooney, it all worked out pretty well...
