George Clooney Reveals The Moment He Decided To Propose To Amal

Raise your hand if your knowledge of George and Amal Clooney’s relationship timeline exceeds your ability to recall details in your own life: so blissfully happy are Hollywood’s premier power couple that whenever one of the pair (OK, it’s almost always George) sits down for an interview, the conversation often winds its way back towards how they fell in love. With Amal covering the May issue of US Vogue before she co-hosts the Met Gala in just under a month’s time, we’ve been treated to a fresh set of romantic revelations from the Clooneys.

As we’ve previously heard from George, the couple first met when Amal accompanied a friend at a dinner hosted at the actor’s Lake Como villa. ‘Of course she was beautiful,’ he tells Vogue. ‘But I also thought she was fascinating, and I thought she was brilliant. Her life was incredibly exciting – the clients she was taking on and the superhuman work that she was doing.’

‘If you know anything about my crazy life, you know that I’d pretty much committed to the idea of never marrying again. But I started dating Amal, and I immediately knew that something was very different,’ he goes on to add. It was when the couple were on a safari trip in Africa, accompanied by friends, that George had a moment of realisation. ‘Some giraffes walked up to her,’ he recalls. ‘They just came out of the blue. I took a picture of her, and she was smiling. I said to my buddy Ben, “You know, I think I should ask her to marry me.” And Ben said, “I think that’s a good idea.”’ One proposal, five years of marriage and two children later, it certainly seems that way.

In the piece, Amal also drops some hints about domestic life with George and twins Ella and Alexander, who will turn one in June. ‘We’ve had some “mamas” and “dadas,”’ she explains, adding that ‘George was very careful to ensure that “mama” was the first word.’ Quite right, too.
