George and Amal Clooney have donated $1 million towards the fight against right-wing extremists in the US following the shocking events at a white suprecacist rally in Charlottesville last week, which resulted in the death of a counter-protester.

The Clooney Foundation for Justice - which the couple set up in 2016 to 'advance justice in courtrooms, communities and classrooms around the world' - gifted the money to the Southern Poverty Law Center, a group which fights hatred and bigotry.

'Amal and I wanted to add our voice (and financial assistance) to the ongoing fight for equality,' George Clooney said. 'There are no two sides to bigotry and hate. We are proud to support the Southern Poverty Law Center in its efforts to prevent violent extremism in the United States. What happened in Charlottesville, and what is happening in communities across our country, demands our collective engagement to stand up to hate.'

'Like George and Amal Clooney, we were shocked by the size, ugliness, and ferocity of the white supremacist gathering in Charlottesville,' added the SPLC's president, Richard Cohen. 'It was a reflection of just how much Trump’s incendiary campaign and presidency have energised the radical right. We are deeply grateful to the Clooney Foundation for standing with us at this critical moment in our country’s fight against hate.'

Since Trump's presidency, funding to combat rightwing extremism has been frozen in the US, causing much concern and drawing eerie comparisons with Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale, which is set in a world where a fundamentalist Christian group has seized control of government. Indeed, the president himself has been accused of fanning the flames of white supremacy by refusing to denounce it initially in his speech following the tragedy in Charlottesville.

The Clooneys were vocal supporters of Trump's democratic rival Hillary Clinton during the presidential race, and even hosted big-money fundraisers for her campaign.
