Flour your buns and knead your dough, because the Great British Bake Off is back for another series of creamy, crumbly treats, all trembling hands fidgeting over skewed half-burned patisseries and cautious gazes at ovens. And we’ve already got a favourite contestant. Martha Collison, 17, has said in her official blurb for the BBC: ‘I may be in school but my head is always in the kitchen.’
Why else is she great? Well, apart from being gutsy enough to be that young and go on the national programme to compete against no end of incredibly experienced bakers, some of whom were probably around to still be doing things by imperial measurements:
She really does love baking
Her Instagram shows her making all sorts of tasty sugary treats, no matter the occasion. First off there’s meringues for a summer fair, mini egg brownies for Easter, an Oreo cookies and cream cake for a mate’s birthday, mini bumblebee cupcakes for, uh, summer, and spreadable biscuits on bagels because, well, why not?!
She’s got science to back/bake it up:
According to Twitter circa May, she wasn’t exactly enjoying her revision for her Chemistry AS Level. But that’s totally ok, at least she was doing Chemistry in the first place, right? Plus, all that knowledge must help with the practical application of baking, right?
She can laugh at herself:
FYI, this was in Spain on a school trup, so something tells us she’s doing a Spanish AS Level, too.
She can make marshmallows
Like, how the fuck do you even make them? Nice work, Martha! Maybe she learned that through her Food Technology A Level?
She once dressed up as a donut for Halloween
She's a GBBO fan
Though she’s not a big fan of Eurovision, once retweeting someone’s comment that the only thing it’s good for is laughing at, she is a big GBBO fan, and was totally team Frances last year:
Oh, and just by the by, she likes storms too:
