The Friends Reunion Will ‘Never’ Happen (SOB)

Could we BE any more heartbroken?

It’s been over ten years since we said goodbye to Rachel, Ross, Chandler, Monica, Phoebe and Joey, and while the passage of time and endless repeats (first on E4, now on Comedy Central) have helped to cushion the blow, we still miss our favourite fictional Friends.

And while we were teased with the prospect of a Friends ‘reunion’ show earlier this year, it was hardly the full-blown special that we’d hoped for. For one thing, Chandler Bing (sorry, Matthew Perry) didn’t even turn up. Classic Chandler.

So, it’s no wonder that people still can’t stop asking the show’s co-creator Marta Kauffman if a proper re-boot will ever happen. Her answer? Prepare to have your heart broken, and then broken some more…

‘They nag me all the time about it, and my answer is that Friends was a show about that time in your life when your friends are your family, and in a weird way, this isn’t that different. Once you start having family of your own it changes, and the show was over. A show has a lifespan, I believe. It has a lifespan like anything else, and there’s no reason to continue doing it just because people miss the characters. Watch the old ones; there is no way we could win that. And there’s no way it would be satisfying and it’ll never happen. We’ll never do it,’ she said in a new interview with Deadline.

So… That’s a resounding no, then. And we understand Marta’s point, we really do. Would we really want to see Joey as a single fifty-something, still attempting to use that ‘How you doin’?’ line? Ross and Rachel’s marital squabbles? Spin-off plotlines with the now-teenage Emma, Jack and Erica?

Oh, who are we kidding. Of course we’d want to see that. Sigh. Back to re-watching our ten season box set from the beginning it is, then…
