In a very Hermione move, the actress has announced that she's leaving the industry for a year to immerse herself in feminism.
Since the Harry Potter films ended in 2011, Emma Watson has been making a name for herself as an advocate for womens' rights. She's now a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador and her 2014 speech, launching the HeForShe initiative to get more men engaged in gender equality, went brilliantly, madly viral.
Obviously these ar barely ripples in a pond, though. The 25 year old has revealed to the author and activist bell hooks in an interview for Paper magazine that she now wants to take year away from acting to continue to further the cause and learn more herself, reading a book a week and "doing a lot of listening."
"I want to try to talk to people who might not encounter feminism and talk to them about feminism. It's a really interesting job, and it's a really interesting line to tread. I want to engage in the topic with people who wouldn't normally.
She's already done a lot: CEOs who are supporters of HeForShe are soon to release to the media what their companies look like internally, publishing information on the gender wage gaps and on which positions are occupied by men and women. This means that big companies like Vodafone, Unilever and Tupperware will be acknowledging the issues within their own companies and talking about how to address them for the first time. #hooray! #progress #UsForEm
