It seems that the 9-year-old Emma Watson took her Harry Potter character very, very seriously. So seriously, in fact, that she began to behave on set in a way that can only be described as utterly Hermione Granger.
In an out take from Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, resurfaced for Jimmy Kimmel Live, Emma embodies Hermione’s ‘know it all’ side. Entirely invested in the scene she’s rehearsing, the young actress inadvertently mouths along with her co-stars Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint as they deliver their lines (because she’s memorised the whole thing, Hermione-style.)
Though she’s now able to laugh off her youthful enthusiasm, Emma told Kimmel that her eagerness actually caused some problems on set. ‘This is actually quite traumatic for me because I created issues because of this,’ she explained.
‘I would ruin takes. Chris [Columbus, director of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone] would be like, “Cut! Emma, you’re doing it again. You’re mouthing Dan’s lines.’ And I’d be like, ‘Ooh, I’m so sorry, so sorry! Oh, I feel so bad!”’
‘I couldn’t help myself,’ she added. ‘I was such a loser. I really loved those books, I really wanted to do my job well, and I kind of over did it.’ Trust Hermione to give it 150 percent (and really, if you haven’t mouthed along with the Harry Potter films as you re-watch for the hundredth time, then you’re probably a Slytherin.)
Emma’s unusual rehearsal techniques clearly didn’t bother her cast mates, who are still her close friends. Doing what any self-respecting millennial would do, she even created a WhatsApp group to bring them together to watch her latest film.
‘We actually have a group WhatsApp which invited everyone, really, from the main cast from Harry Potter to come to the [Beauty and the Beast] screening,’ she told Entertainment Tonight. ‘It’s a case of trying to get people into the right places, but yeah, everyone has been very supportive and I’m very supported by my old co-stars.’
