From La La Land to… Middle Earth? Emma Stone has been photographed filming her forthcoming Netflix series Maniac in Westchester, New York sporting a hairdo (and costume, and general steely demeanour) that can only be described as reminiscent of Orlando Bloom’s Legolas in the screen adaptation of Lord of the Rings.
Photos from the set show Emma, who swapped her trademark auburn tones for platinum blonde ahead of filming for Maniac earlier this year, wearing her long hair pulled back from her face in braids. The Oscar-winning actress is wearing a long brown cloak with faux fur detail, while brandishing what appears to be a bow and a quiver of arrows and sporting pointy elf ear prosthetics. So far, so Legolas (and no, we aren’t ashamed of our reference points right now).
So, is Emma making a move into the world of fantasy with her latest project? The answer isn’t quite as simple as that. Maniac is a dark comedy based on a Norwegian series which revolves around two patients with mental illnesses, who oscillate between reality and a fantasy world (hence the elves). According to the streaming service, the show is ‘about an institutionalised man who lives a fantasy life in his dreams,’ and is set to arrive online some time in 2018.
Maniac marks the first time that this year’s Best Actress winner has teamed up with the brand, but Emma isn’t in entirely unfamiliar territory: she’s starring opposite her friend and Superbad co-star Jonah Hill, while Sonoya Mizuno (who played her roommate in La La Land) has been cast in a regular role.
Also appearing in the show will be Sally Field, Julia Garner, Justin Theroux and former Girls star Jemima Kirke, while Cary Fukunaga (responsible for the Mia Wasikowska-starring Jane Eyre and recent Netflix film Beasts Of No Nation) is directing.
