To the outside world, Oscar-nominated golden girl Emma Stone appears to be the most confident, self-assured actress in Hollywood.

The 28-year-old has starred in some of the industry's best-loved movies from Easy A (2010) to Crazy Stupid Love (2011). And if her latest critically acclaimed film La La Land is anything to go by, it seems there is no stopping the rising star.

But the actress has opened up about the struggles she has faced with her mental health throughout her life.

She recently revealed to Rolling Stone: "My anxiety was constant. I would ask my mom a hundred times how the day would lay out. What time she was going to drop me off? Where was she going to be? What would happen at lunch? Feeling nauseous. At a certain point, I couldn’t go to friends’ houses anymore - I could barely get out the door to school."

Yet her anxiety-riddled childhood is what propelled Emma into acting as she deemed the art form as a kind of therapy. At the tender age of fifteen, the star even persuaded her parents to move to Hollywood in order to kickstart her career. And the daring move most certainly paid off.

The actress still finds herself battling with anxiety and social phobias however, admitting 'it's just the way I'm wired'. Though Emma now keeps them in control through certain tactics.

She told The Hollywood Reporter, "Before any interview, I have to sit with myself for five minutes and breathe and get centered because I get so nervous.”

She continued: "Interviews are kind of like therapy, except all your answers are being written down and printed. I always want to be on the other side of it. I don't want to be deconstructed for millions. I'd rather do the deconstructing."

The actress now recognises what triggers her anxiety, though one film role brought back her childhood struggles. She may have played an oscar-nominated role in 2014 hit film Birdman, but the actress revealed the difficulties she faced.

The 28-year-old admitted: "The tightrope walk of that movie, the pacing and timing - I lost my mind a bit. I just got to a point where I snapped."

Needless to say Hollywood's 'It' girl continues to make waves in the film industry, as she may be in the running for an Oscar this year too, for her glorious role as Mia in La La Land.
